Course designer Commander John Harris collaborated with five-time British Open champion Peter Thomson and then US Tour player, Mike Wolveridge, on their first ever project in 1970 and Wairakei was then remodelled by Thomson & Wolveridge  again in 1997. Wairakei International is NZ’s first resort course and was, as recently as 1996, ranked by one American magazine is being among the top 20 courses in the world outside of the United States. Wairakei is visually striking and challenging layout and set in a valley surrounded by pine covered mountains. The layout is  immaculately presented and complements a superb design and it would be advisable to hire a cart due to the hilly nature of the course.
