Designed by master golf course architect Graham Marsh, designer of Sydney’s Terrey Hills, Palm Meadows in Queensland, and WA’s The Vines and Secret Harbour Growling Frog is without a doubt one of of the top 3 public access courses in Victoria. Situated over 30 kilometres north of the CBD (30-40 mins drive), the Growling Frog Golf Course isa  rare opportunity to experience a level of quality and facility that you tend to find at private clubs. The greens fees are also at affordable prices. (especially if you want to take up the offer of $20.50 after 2pm on weekdays). The course is situated amongst 300 year old River Red Gums on more than 300 acres, and surrounded by abundant wildlife including a multitude of large kangaroos who seem to enjoy playing in the bunkers and generally getting in the way. A hard but fair challenge, with great greens, well conditioned fairways, excellent bunkering but the rough can be dry and hard in some areas but that has to be expected after Victoria’s prolonged drought. Not sure if I have just been unlucky but have played the course 3 times and everytime I have visited the course it has been extremely hot and windy so I strongly advise taking plenty of liquids. Growling Frog has a great clubhouse that is up on the hill overlooking the course for any after match sustenance and from my expereince the pro shop staff always seem to be helful.
