Built on its current site in 1909, the course has undergone many changes through its history with considerable encroachment on the course being made by the Wellington Airport in 1954, 71 and 92. In 1993 Graham Marsh were asked to prepare a plan of designing a new 18-hole course within the confines of the club’s new boundary. In 1994 work commenced on the new course with members continuing to play 18-holes and was completed in 1995. With 105 pot bunkers the course rewards the straight hitter while still having to maintain considerable length and of course the seemingly always present wind. If you play at Miramar it would be advantageous if you are good at hitting low wind piercing shots as the course is likely to be one of the windiest courses you will ever play.
My favourite hole is number 2, a long par 5 playing into a narrow well bunkered green. There is out of bounds along the right side and bunkers guard both sides of the fairway for the long drive off the tee. The second shot needs to take into account the considerable distance left to the green with particular emphasis on the water hazard running across the fairway 40 metres short of the green. Another bonus is that more often than not you are also rewarded with great views of the planes coming and going at the airport. Fees are Affiliated $50, non-affiliated $65.
