Designed by Alister Mackenzie’s Australian protege Alex Russell (Royal Melbourne East and Lake Karrinyup) in 1949. Paraparaumu has since hosted the NZ Golf Open 12 times including in 2002 when Tiger Woods visited NZ’s shores and left with a dissapointing 9th place, admittedly when the course was not at its best. Changes to the set up of the course during the past few years have recaptured the original links character and you will now find the green surrounds have been closely shaved to place a premium on greater accuracy. These tight cropped areas drop steeply off the edge of firm elevated greens and should you be unlucky feed into the surrounding bunkers . Several deep bunkers around the course have now been revetted, making them formidable hazards and a reminder of great link style courses in Scotland & Ireland.
